The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released a new protocol for the safe burial of victims of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) to help check the transmission of the disease.

According to the new protocol released at the WHO headquarters in Geneva at the weekend, it emphasises a safe and dignified burial of people who die from Ebola virus disease, which involves inclusion of family members and encouraging religious rites as an essential part of safe burials.

Explaining the protocol, one of WHO’s top Ebola experts, Dr. Pierre Formenty, said, “at least 20 per cent of new Ebola infections occur during burials of Ebola deceased patients”.

According to him, “By building trust and respect between burial teams, bereaved families and religious groups, we are building trust and safety in the response itself,”

Formenty added, “Introducing components such as inviting the family to be involved in digging the grave and offering options for dry ablution and shrouding will make a significant difference in curbing Ebola transmission.
