The young girl’s life was brutally cut short Wednesday after she was allegedly gang-raped and hung from a tree in West Bengal. Before the cops could respond, residents of the village Rajnagar took justice into their own hands and beat a suspect to death.

Outraged Indian villagers reportedly beat a man to death after he was accused of raping and killing a young girl.
Ratan Shah, 60, and his two buddies were subjected to the mob’s justice after reportedly gang-raping a 7-year-old and hanging her body from a tree on the edges of Rajnagar village. The child had decided to go to a store to buy snacks after she came home from school Wednesday, the Bangalore Mirror reports. Her dad, Soumitra Barman, became worried when she didn’t return home that night.
Barman alerted neighbors, who began to help search for the girl, the Times of India reports. They initially thought she had fallen into a pond while playing.
The dad eventually came upon his daughter’s body, swinging from a tree. Her clothes had been ripped off, which led villagers to suspect that she was raped.
The villagers immediately turned their attention to Shah, a village tantric who was suspected of molesting women in the past. Before the cops could intervene, the furious villagers attacked Shah and his two male friends.
Officers who reached the village Thursday morning found the three men unconscious and severely beaten. Shah was later declared dead at a district hospital. The other two men were listed in critical condition.
The victim’s uncle, Samir Burman, explained that the attack was retaliation. A 7-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in Indian village Rajnagar, enraging its denizens — who beat one suspect to death.

The region’s police superintendent confirmed that the department was looking into the case. The girl’s body was sent for a postmorten exam. The crime bore a grisly resemblance to another gang rape that took place in May. Two teenage gang-rape victims were found hanging from a mango tree in India’s Utter Pradesh state. The cousins had gone to relieve themselves in the fields, since their impoverished families couldn’t afford a toilet at home.
Official statistics say about 25,000 rapes are committed every year in India, a nation of 1.2 billion people. Activists say the actual number of rapes is much higher than that, since many families pressure victims to stay quiet about sexual assaults. Indian officials, who for decades had done little about sexual violence, have faced growing public anger since the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a young woman on a moving New Delhi bus, an attack that sparked national outrage.
The nationwide outcry led the federal government to rush legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women. The law also makes it a crime for officers to refuse to open cases when complaints are made.
