Doctors in Hyderabad, India have achieved a ground-breaking feat after they performed heart surgery on a foetus. The unborn child had a serious condition that would have become incurable once it was delivered so it was made to undergo the corrective operation while still in its mother, Sirisha's, womb.
The surgeon who performed the surgery, Dr. K Nageswara Rao, said: "At 25-26 weeks, the left ventricle started deteriorating, getting damaged and shrinking.
We realized this is going to be a serious condition where the left side of the heart will be too small and not useful and it won't be possible to perform surgery after birth.
So we decided to go for this procedure called foetal aortal volvotomy." 12 specialists performed the surgery which is the first of its kind. Sirisha and her husband, Arun, registered their joy at the success of the procedure.
