The police in Akwa Ibom on 5 October foiled an attempt by two ex-militants to blow off the 1.5km Itu-Calabar bridge. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong, revealed this on Thursday in a news conference in Uyo, the state capital. According to Achong on 20 September, 2014, the command received an intelligence report that a group of aggrieved militants had planned to blow off the bridge.
He also said the collaboration between the State Security Service, the army, and other security agencies, made it possible to trace the suspect from Odukpani in Cross River State to Itu Bridge, where they were arrested. Those arrested include Mr. Samuel Yaw, a Ghananian resident in Bakassi Local Government and Mr. Monday Anthony, of Ikang village also in Bakassi.
He said, “On September 20, 2014, the command received information that a group of aggrieved militants planned to blow off the Calabar/Itu Bridge. “Upon thorough and intensive surveillance, on October 5, 2014, two suspects; Samuel Coleman Yaw, a Ghanaian resident in Bakassi LGA, Cross River State, were arrested.”
He, however, said the mastermind, Mr. Boronyefa Olorogun, alias General Bofa, escaped, but was traced to Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, where he was arrested by the combined team of police and DSS on October 17. The police boss said six Super Power 90 explosives, five blasting laps, three rolls of detonating cords and one Honda Accord 1997 model were recovered from the suspects.
