The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has set 2020 as deadline for the use of single currency in the region. The announcement was made in Calabar on Monday by the Director of Strategic Planning, ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Essien Abel Essien during a meeting on strategic planning framework for 2016-2020.
Essien said the “committee is working assiduously towards ensuring that it succeeds in meeting the target set for the use of the currency in the sub region.”
He said the committee would do its work on the modalities for the implementation of the expected monetary policy while the implementation would depend majorly on the Heads of State of ECOWAS member country’s.
Essien said: “The 2020 vision seeks to create a borderless, peaceful, prosperous and cohesive region and built on good governance.“It will also give people the capacity to access and harness its enormous resources through the creation of opportunities for sustainable development and environmental preservation.
“The 2016-2020 vision is specifically to ensure congruence of purpose and to ensure the effective mobilisation and utilisation of the region’s abundant resources and comparative advantage.“It will also provide the general framework for advancing integration wok in the region and guiding national development planning process.’’
